2020 Update: Phonak added M-Titanium to their Titanium Range - Their latest generation of super discreet custom hearing aids made from their innovative titanium shell along with their Marvel technology, instead of the Belong technology of the B-Titanium and the original Phonak Titanium Hearing Aids range.
This new IIC (invisible in canal) hearing aid from Phonak is made out of the metal titanium. Is this a gimmick? No, it is useful from several standpoints.
Size
They can make it a lot thinner, this results in a 26% size reduction compared to what they could do before with the normal hard acrylic shells.
Hypoallergenic
In the past, some people with sensitive ears haven't been able to wear plastic hearing aids and so either couldn't wear discreet hearing aids or had to go to the expense of having them gold plated. Just like gold, titanium is non-reactive to people's skin.
Tougher
15 times more so in fact. Hearing aids are known to occasionally have accidents. Having a hearing aid that is less likely to get shattered to uselessness if you stand on it is mainly appealing to those who have done exactly that at some point.
Technology
The Virto B-Titanium 90 is the top of the range and has the same new Autosense operating system as the Audeo Belong 90 that came out in September 2016. The main features have been written about already on the Belong 90 page so click here to read more about that. The main points to note are that the Titanium 90 has no rechargeable, CROS/BICROSs or wireless function.
